Scholarships for Leadership and Social Justice For just $50 a month, you can support a future community leader in rural El Salvador
Most Oscar Romero University students are from poor, rural families who live in Northern El Salvador, where many of the most devastating effects of the war have left their mark. Their parents generally would have found it impossible to send their children to the National University in the capital of El Salvador. Even though tuition is free at the government-sponsored university, it is too expensive for rural farmers and day laborers to pay for their child to go to school in the city. Oscar Romero University is the only alternative for these young people to work their way out of poverty and to receive an education. Moreover, once they complete their degrees, the university encourages graduates to remain in their communities and to contribute toward local development by establishing cottage industries, small businesses, and the services and infrastructure needed by the community. That means that some day, your donation may multiply itself a hundred fold, as a single educated adult contributes to the economic and social well-being of an entire community.
