Learn More About Archbishop Oscar Romero

December 2006

Dear Friends and Followers of Oscar Romero,

Good news! Your phone calls and letters are starting to take effect!

Four members of the U.S. Congress have written to Salvadoran President Tony Saca to urge his support for the future of Oscar Romero University. Two letters have been sent, including one from Representatives Jim McGovern and Chris Van Hollen as well as one from Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.

The Human Rights Commission of the Archdiocese of San Salvador has been working with three University trustees to identify and prosecute a small group of individuals who have allegedly misused University resources (and the name of Archbishop Romero) for personal gain. We have asked the Salvadoran Attorney General to prosecute anyone found guilty of wrongdoing. We have also requested that the Ministry of Education  support our campaign to strengthen the University's administrative structures. If all goes well, the University will emerge from this crisis with a renewed sense of mission and an opportunity to better connect its programs with the vision Romero preached: to reduce poverty through education.

However, the Ministry of Education might still decide to close the University temporarily. The students of Oscar Romero University should not suffer because of the misdeeds of a small group of administrators.

We need your help – as members of the international community -- to keep the university open. Please support our efforts to build a transparent and democratic institution that honors the legacy of Oscar Romero.

MEMBERS OF U.S. CONGRESS APPEAL TO SALVADORAN PRESIDENT ON BEHALF OF ROMERO U.

Washington, DC. Dec. 12.  Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy have written to Salvadoran President Antonio Saca urging him to support the future of the Oscar Romero University. In November, Representatives Chris Van Hollen (D, MD) and Jim McGovern (D, MA) delivered their own letter to the Salvadoran President , who was visiting Washington to sign the Millennium Challenge Fund agreement. Both letters request President Saca's support to keep the University open while legal problems are addressed. We believe this kind of international pressure will make an important difference in attaining transparency in both national and higher education governance.
